Orchids & Combined
Despite Papua New Guinea being exposed to rest of the world and closer to Australia, it is still a remote place and a mystery to many. Papua New Guinea is rich in orchids. It’s the last frontier for orchids. You will discover many species if you decide to adventure into remote villages. More than 100 different species of orchids can be found around Magic Mountain. From the Highlands to the coast orchid lovers would enjoy having good time in PNG. Customized itineries will be prepared per customer request.

Following program covers Orchid with Birding and Culture

Day 1  (Lunch & Dinner on arrival)
Meet/greet on arrival and transfer to Traveler’s Hut for lunch and continue to Magic Mountain Nature lodge. After check in, take brief tour around the lodge overnight.

Magic Mountain Nature Lodge is set in a natural and lush environment. Based on typical Highlands architectural design, the lodge perfectly blends into the natural environment and traditional identities of the people living at Paiya village. This would be a magical experience offering facilities that places high emphasis on quality and standards. All units self - contained (toilet and shower inside) 24 hours electricity and hot water system.  Magic Mountain nature lodge is about 45 minutes drive from Mt. Hagen. It is located at the foot of Mt. Hagen. Many tourists have highly commended Magic Mountain Nature lodge because of its setting and scenic views overlooking Mt. Hagen valley.

Day 2  ( B/fast, Lunch & Dinner)
“Morning around Magic Mountain”

B/fast and follow the tracks in to the bush in search of orchids. You will certainly find different types of orchids including Dendrobium cuthbertsonii and many other endemics and exotic plants.

“Afternoon”
Transfer to a small orchid farm near Magic Mountain. This farm is run by a young local man. Expect to see orchids, exotic plants, birds, water fall (small) and a cave with skeletons of men who died in tribal war fare  some 100 years back. Take time out in the bush exploring orchids & plants till afternoon and retire to Magic Mountain. The distance between the car park and the orchid farm is about 45 minutes walk. Tracks are built for every age group but with some precaution.

Note:
I am not familiar with orchids but sure there are different species, about 100 of them can be found around the lodge and further in towards Mt. Hagen.


Birds likely to be seen at the lodge are;
Red colored myzomela, yellow browed melidectors, Belford melidectors, Hooded manikins, white shouldered fairy wren, willie wag tail, Pied chat, Blue grey robin, Brown sickle bill, orange crowned Fairy Wren, Bremhns tiger parrot,  Rufous Snapped Whistler, King of Saxony BOP, Superb  BOP, Niugini White eyes, Island leaf warbler, Black butcher bird, Ornate Maledicts, Common Smoky honey eater, Fan tail berry pecker, Friendly fan tail, Black fain tail, Dimorphic fan tail, Long tailor strike, Yellow Billed Lorikeet, Orange billed lorikeet, Brown breasted durigin, Papuan Lorikeet, Macgregor  bower bird, Black Kite, Brahminy kite, Glossy swiflet, Great wood swallow, brush cuckoo, Fan tail cuckoo,  black pitohui and more.

Day 3   (B/fast, Lunch &  Dinner )
“Orchid”

B/fast and drive to Pit’s orchid farm up Kuta range. It will take approximately 1hr to reach the site. The farm is small in size but there is good collection of different types of orchids. The owner, Mr. Pits is an expert in orchids who will take you through explaining every orchid in his farm.    You will be invited to further explore orchids in the nearby bushes. Do your own search and discover as many as you like and retire for lunch at Traveler’s Hut.

“Afternoon culture”
After lunch transfer to Mt. Hagen market, one of the best markets in PNG selling produce from the gardens such as fruits & vegetables and continue to Wrup village for mud man show.
Mt. Hagen town to Wrup is approximately 45 minutes drive. You will drive through gardens, villages and coffee gardens. Meet/greet on arrival and proceed to the arena for the show.
Bodies decorated with mud/clay and huge masks hanging over their heads, bows and arrows in their hands, silently walking towards the audiences, searching for something to devour. Do not be scared, relax take photos remain sited until they are finished. You will be asked to try one over your head for photographing. Mingle with the locals and learn about their cultures, the way of life and the stories behind the mud man. Continue to Ulia village for Huli wig man show. Huli wig man in traditional attire, bodies and faces painted with clay and charcol singing and dancing. You may join them if you wish. Afternoon retire to MM nature lodge.

Day 4   (B/fast, Lunch &  Dinner )
“Reggiana Bop”

Early B/fast and drive for an hour and further 10 minutes walk to the site.  Spend sufficient time here watching the bird singing/dancing and displaying.
You also have the chance of seeing other species of BOP - Superb BOP, Magnificent BOP, Trumpet Manicored BOP, Jobi Manicored BOP and other non BOP species - Helmet friar bird. Yellow breasted bower bird, Rainbow lorikeet, hooded pitohui, Doubled eyed pygmy parrot, Clamorous reed warbler, White shoulder fairy wren, great wood swallow, Little grass bird, Dollar bird, Purple swamp Hen and more.  Some of the birds named can be viewed away from Regianna Bop.

(Note:  We have built hides - 3-4 meters high.  This is for convenient.)

After Reggiana Bop transfer to Traveler’s Hut - Mt. Hagen for lunch and continue with culture activities.

“Afternoon - Culture & Orchid visit”
After lunch transfer to Waghi valley for coffee, tea plantations, and skeleton man show. Young men paint their bodies with clay & charcoal, portraying skeletons of the past, walking silently looking for something to devour. Spend time here with the skeleton men and know the story behind the skeleton.  At the same location is a small orchid farm which can be visited. The owner is a keen orchid and exotic plant lover who takes time to explain each plant. After the visit transfer to Magic Mountain Nature Lodge.

Day 5  (B/fast, Lunch & Dinner)
“Full day Birding & Orchids - Rondon”

Rondon is about 1 hour 30 minutes drive from Magic Mountain.  B/fast at 4:30 am and 5:00am transfer to Rondon and continue to the birding site for 1 hours walk. There are treks built for birding. You will take time to walk along the treks and see birds named bellow including other species. This will be a full day program.

King of Saxony, Princes Stephanie’s Astraphia Superb bird of paradise., Brown Sickle bill, black sickle bill, short tailed paradigalla, blue bird of paradise  Other non birds of Paradise. Honey eater, Blue capped ifritta, fantails, Robins, wallows, whistlers, Doves & pigeons, falcons, Parrots, Lori keets. Bower birds, scrub wrens, berry packers, cuckoo - shrike, goshawk & kites and other species.

Note:
Blue bird of paradise will take one full day to view because of the distance.


Continue with lunch at Rondon Ridge hotel - owned by Trans Niugini tours.
Spend afternoon at the hotel looking for orchids. The hotel has collection of orchids which can be explored as well.  Afternoon retire to MM nature lodge and overnight.
Scenic view is spectacular from Rondon overlooking Mt. Hagen town and Waghi valley. You may take time to walk few kms in to the surrounding villages, meet with them and talk with them. They may be interested to help you with orchids, birds and other items of interest.

Day 6   (B/fast, Lunch & Dinner)
“Orchid & Birding at Kumul lodge”

B/fast and transfer to Tambul / Mt. Giluwe road and look for orchids in the bush and continue to boarder of Mt. Hagen/ Enga to visit a small orchid farm. Further continue to Kumul lodge to see birds. Birds come to feeding table and feed. Spend ample time here and retire in the afternoon. 
Birds of Paradise likely to be seen at the lodge are; Black single bill, Stephanie Astraphia, white ribbon tailed and other non Bop species.

Day 7  (B/fast, Lunch & Dinner )
“Full day culture”

This will be a final day in Mt. Hagen therefore the program ends with a feast and celebration.  People of Paiya village will be invited to join the party.   Ladies put on their dance with faces painted, bird of paradise plumage, body ornaments while man do the same with head Wigs hanging over their heads, faces decorated with charcoal and clay, singing and dancing. Chief & wives in their attire as well, exposing some of the valuable item on their bodies. Continue to visit traditional items such as digging sticks, stone axes, traditional money - kina and others kept in a traditional hut. You also have the chance of visiting Spirit stones and skeletons of chiefs & warriors worshiped and praised for many years as their gods. 

After all these join the locals in the traditional cuisine called “Mumu” prepared underground with hot stones mixed with vegetables, pork, lamp, pig or chicken. This time it will be pig. Pig will be operated in a transitional fashion, cooked and served in local practice as well. Everyone will be sited to receive their share.

The community will be invited to come and join the mumu.


Day 8   (B/fast, Lunch & Dinner)
Transfer to Betty’s lodge - Mt. Wilhelm

B/fast and transfer to Kegesugl via Kundiawa town. It will take approximately 2 hours to get to Kundiawa from Mt. Hagen and further 4 hours to Kegesugl. Overnight at Kegesugul - Betty’s lodge and be ready for an early morning hike to the Base Camp at Lake Piunde and Yaundo. 

Note:
You will be accompanied by local gudies /porters. Spend day there exploring orchids around the lakes, extensive grassland and sub-alpine forest and retire in the afternoon. Betty’s lodge to the base camp is approximately 3hrs walk.

Note:
You will need 2x 4wheel drives for Kegesugl - Betty’s lodge for 2x trips rtn. Road to Mt. Wilhelm is in a bad condition. Using 4wheel drive is ok but it will be uncomfortable.

 
Day  9   (Meals: B/fast, Lunch & Dinner)
B/fast and spend time around the lodge in search of orchids.

Betty assures that there a lot of orchids at her lodge and Mt. Wilhelm to see.


Day 10  (Meals: B/fast, lunch & dinner)
Early B/fast and full day at Betty’s lodge for orchids.

Day 11  (B/fast, Lunch & Dinner)
Transfer back to Mt. Hagen and overnight Traveler’s hut

Day 12  (B/fast, Lunch & Dinner)
B/fast and transfer to Port Moresby. Meet by local guide and transfer to hotel - Holiday inn Express and check in. After check in, tour Port Moresby - Botanical garden, hand crafts markets, fish market and retire to hotel and overnight.

Day 13  (B/fast)
Morning B/fast and transfer to Warirata national park for birds as well as orchids. This would be lowland birds and orchids. On your return visit Port Moresby national park located along the road. Here a lot of orchids are grown. Birds of paradise and non Bop paradise species kept in an ovary as well.  Take time to visit this beautiful park and continue to Port Moresby and overnight.

Day 14  (B/fast)

B/fast and transfer to airport for international destination.
