Culture & Village Study
After passage through custom’s formalities meet our guide at the loby area who will assist you to check in for the Mt. Hagen flight, exchange money and even purchase local Sim for your phone to be used while in PNG. Walk to the domestic terminal and wait for your flight to be announced and board the flight for Mt. Hagen.

Day 1  (Lunch & Dinner on arrival)

Meet on arrival and transfer to Traveler’s Hut (Mt. Hagen) for a short stopover followed with lunch and continue to Magic Mountain Nature Lodge.   Expect to see villages, small markets, the panoramic view and of course the people selling or doing something along the road. Mt. Hagen to Magic Mountain is about 45 minutes drive. Check in on arrival and leisure the whole afternoon.

Note:
Night falls around 6:00pm, dinner around 7:00pm and onward to bed. Temperature is between 8-13 degree Celsius and gets cold at night. You need warm clothes. Beddings are thick and hot water bottles provided under each bed to keep the beds warm. Free to walk around the lodge for orchids, exotic plants and birds.


MAGIC MOUNTAIN NATURE LODGE

Magic Mountain Nature Lodge is set in a natural and lush environment. Based on typical Highland’s architectural design, the lodge perfectly blends into the natural environment and traditional identities of the people living at Paiya village. This would be a magical experience offering facilities that places high emphasis on quality and standards. All units self - contained (toilet and shower inside) and 24 hours electricity and hot water system. Magic Mountain nature lodge is about 45 minutes drivefrom Mt. Hagen. It is located at the foot of Mt. Hagen. You will be traveling on a sealed road accept about a Km from the turn off where you will travel on a river gravel road using 4wheel drive. Many tourists have highly commended Magic Mountain Nature lodge because of its setting and scenic views overlooking Nebilyer valley. The lodge is owned by Paiya tours.

Day 2  (B/fast, Lunch & Dinner)
“Full day culture visit

B/fast and transfer to Mt. Hagen market, one of the best markets in PNG selling local produce such as fruits & vegetables and continue to Wrup village for the mud man show.
Mt. Hagen town to Wrup is approximately 45 minutes drive. You will drive through gardens, villages and coffee gardens.  Meet/greet on arrival and proceed to the arena for the show.
Bodies decorated with mud/clay and huge masks hanging over their heads, bows and arrows in their hands, silently walking towards the audiences, searching for something to devour.  Do not be scared, relax take photos remain seated until they are finished. You will be asked to try one over your head for photographing. Mingle with the locals and learn about their cultures, the way of life and the stories behind the mud man.

Continue to another village after you have satisfied with the mud man. The next village is about 30 minutes drive from here, for the famous Huli Wig man of Tari show. They have migrated to Mt. Hagen and have resided here for many years.  Faces decorated with traditional colors, put on traditional attires exposing some of their beautiful body ornaments, singing and dancing to the beat of the drums. You may join them in the dance or face painting if you are interested.
Spend ample time here talking with the villagers and learn about the Huli people their way of life and cultural importance which they still maintain after many years of Christianity and Western influence.
Transfer further Avi village about 25 minutes drive. Visit the Chimbu man in skeleton display. Here young boys do their make ups with charcoal and clay decorating their bodies replicating spirits with skeleton bodies. These spirits are believed to be dead persons from their own tribe who have come back to help and heal them from sick, trouble and worries. Even take part in some of their cultural rituals.  Communicate with the locals to know the story behind the skeleton man and retire to Mt. Hagen for lunch.
After lunch continue to  Kumul lodge for birding - see birds come to the feeding table and feed. Your chance to see some of the rare species of birds of paradise such  as Stephanie Astraphia, Ribbon tailed Astraphia, Single Bill and other Non Bop species. Afternoon retire to MM Nature lodge and over night.

Day 3 (B/fast, Lunch & Dinner)
“Full day village study - Paiya village”
B/fast and early morning transfer to Paiya village for village study tour - Meet the Chief and wives in traditional attire exposing some of the traditional garments hanging on their bodies. Visit a village museum where traditional valuables kept including the traditional money - Kina, continue to see spirit stones believed to be over 200 years old. The chief takes time to tell stories of each item including the skeleton gods. 
Do your own study and continue to the ceremonial ground to witness ladies & man put on their make ups for dancing. Man and women put on traditional dance with faces painted, body ornaments, head wig with birds of paradise plumage.
Spend ample time taking photos, mingle with the performers and learn about their cultures and way of life. Extend your program with traditional cuisine prepared underground with hot stones called Mumu. 

Day 4 (Meals: B/fast)
Breakfast and transfer to Mt. Hagen airport and onward to Port Moresby/ other destinations.

Early B/fast and transfer to Goroka. Traveling time will be approximately 5 hours. Stopover in necessary for meeting people, viewing some of the great valleys, high mountains terrains, rivers and local markets as you drive along the Highlands Highway.
Along the way, meet the people of Mindima village for courtship performance and continue to Goroka and check in at GK lodge and overnight.

Day 5 (Meals: B/fast, Lunch & Dinner)
B/fast and transfer out for village study tour - Visit McCarthy museum located within Goroka town and continue to coffee processing factory to see how coffee is processed for export and onward to Goroka market.  Slightly different to the Mt. Hagen market especially the organization.
Do your own observations and continue to Asaro village located approximately 30kms from Goroka township.  Welcome by the local people and allow you to visit their village. Take time to visit Asaro village and other neighboring villages followed with traditional cooking - Mumu slightly different to Hagen Mumu. Here water is poured in to the oven in order to produce hot steam to cook while the Hagen mumu, water is not used only steam from the hot stones circulated within the pit to cooks the meal.
You have the chance of seeing how masks are formed from mud & clay follow with demonstration of masks hanging over their heads, bows and arrows in their hands, silently walking towards the audiences, searching for something to devour. Do not be scared, relax take photos remain sited until they are finished. You will be asked to try one over your head for photographing. Mingle with the locals and learn about their cultures, the way of life and stories behind the mud man.
Afternoon retire to the lodge and overnight.

Day 6  (Meals: B/fast, Lunch & Dinner)
Morning B/fast and transfer to the airport and onward to Port Moresby. Meet by local guide and transfer to the hotel, check in and continue with lunch.  After lunch brief tour of Port Moresby - National parliament haus, national museum, fish market, arts & crafts  market, botanical garden and retire to hotel and overnight.

Day 7  (Meals: B/fast  provided)
Breakfast and transfer to airport for onward international destination..

B/fast and transfer to airport for onward flight to Wewak via Port Moresby. Meet on arrival and transfer to hotel and check in. Afternoon tour Wewak town - Kris organizes a welcome dance in Wewak town and continue to see war relics, old church buildings, settlements, local market and back to hotel.  Overnight: Boutique hotel.

Day 7  (Meals: B/fast, Lunch & Dinner)
Early morning B/fast and transfer to Pagwi by 4 WD or by bus (3-4 hours drive) then connect with motorized canoe to Kanganamun. Meet on arrival and check into village guesthouse. Afternoon tour Kanganamun village - making sago, weaving, making carvings and other art displays and overnight.  Overnight: Kanaganamum village.

Note:
Accommodation is very basic - mattress on the floor, pit toilet outside, basic food , shower from buckets and hurricane lamp in some locations while generator provided in other locations.


Day 8   (Meals: B/fast, Lunch & Dinner)
B/fast and get prepared for the mini festival organized by the local people there. The local people  put on traditional dance for the group. Take time to take photos, mingle with the people  and learn about their cultures and way of life. Take time also to visit Spirit houses and its spiritual displays, gods believed to be living spirits that had been worshiped for many years. Overnight village. 

Note: We will organize male/female initiation where skin cutting takes place. This is a sacred occasion. If it is done than we will be charged more but interesting to watch. 

Day 9   (Meals: B/fast, Lunch & Dinner)
Continue with village study and culture activities as you travel upstream back to Pagwi and onward to a waiting vehicle back to Wewak.
and overnight.  Overnight:  Boutique hotel.

Day 10  (Meals: B/fast, Lunch & Dinner)
Morning B/fast and transfer to Port Moresby. Meet on arrival and transfer to Holiday Inn hotel and check in followed with lunch. After lunch tour Port Moresby - Botanical garden, national museum, national parliament haus, fish market, brief tour of Port Moresby and retire to hotel and overnight.

Day 11  (Meals: B/fast, Lunch & Dinner)
B/fast and transfer to airport for onward international destination.
